The Distinctions Between "要(yào)" and "会(huì)"

Today we would like to share the differences between "要(yào)" and "会(huì)".

Firstly, "要(yào)" and "会(huì)" have different meanings.

"要(yào)" often means "to want".

For example:

"会(huì)" indicates "can" (the ability to do something)

For instance,

Here both sentences mean, "It will rain tonight.".

But the sentence with "会" indicates "it might rain tonight.", which means the speaker is not entirely sure whether it will rain or not.

However, the sentence with “要” indicates it will rain with certainty.

In contrast, when negative "不会" means a definite "will not".

For example:

We do not use "不要" to indicate "will not".

"要" can be combined with "了" as a structure "要...了" to indicate something is going to happen.

For instance:

Here "要" can be replaced by "就要jiuyao", "快要kuàiyao" and "快kuài" as they all have the same meaning.

For example:

飞机要起飞了,快点!

飞机就要起飞了,快点!

飞机快要起飞了,快点!

飞机快起飞了,快点!

They all mean "The plane is going to take off, hurry up!”

However, if there is an adverbial of time in the sentence, only 就要...了 can be used.

Here are some examples:
